The New Jersey Deputy Fire Chiefs Association purchased one of the black granite panels, when Vietnam Veterans' Memorial was being built.
Deputy Fire Chief, Denis Onieal (now the Superintendent of the National Fire Academy) was the Committee Member in charge to purchase our black granite panel.
We wanted to honor the Firefighters and members of the Armed Forces who gave their life during the Vietnam War.
October 15th was Firefighter Memorial Day so we requested to purchase the panel for October 15, any year.
The Vietnam Veterans' Memorial has 366 panels, on which are the names of the fallen New Jersey Veterans, for any one, of the ten years the Vietnam War continued.
Our panel contains the names of the two service members who were killed in action on October 15th. They are: Sgt. Frank A. Price, U.S. Army and Cpl. William A. Schulz, USMC
Each year the New Jersey Deputy Fire Chiefs Association gives a $250.00 scholarship to a student who is graduating from the High School that Sgt. Price or Cpl. Schulz graduated from.Sgt. Price graduated from Morris Hill High School, Rockaway, New Jersey and Cpl. William A. Schulz graduated from Middletown North High School, Middletown, New Jersey.
To be awarded this scholarship, a student is required to visit the Vietnam Veterans' Memorial and a Fire House in his area. The student is then required to write a 500 word essay, on what the Vietnam Veterans' Memorial Day events and the Scholarship Award Program.
In addition, the New Jersey Deputy Fire Chiefs Association holds a Memorial Service on a Saturday closest to the October 15th date. Deputy Fire Chief Leonard Swan (Retired) of the Clifton Fire Department is the Chairman of the Memorial Day events and the Scholarship Award Program.
For 2011 our Memorial Services will be on Saturday, October 15th at 12 noon. It is a short 20 minute service and you are welcome to join us.
Also, the Vietnam Veterans' Educational Center is open free to the public all day Saturday, Ocotber 15, 2011, as part of our Memorial Service donation center.
